Welcome.
Lou Smith is based at APT Studios in Deptford, and has worked there since 1995. She studied at Ravensbourne College of Art and Design and was awarded a 1st class Honours Degree in Fine/Art Painting. She has lived and worked in London since 1978.
Lou Smith is an abstract painter whose paintings are large scale surfaces, saturated with colour and infused with light. Layers of colour gently resonate within these paintings as surfaces collide and mingle. Lou works on unstretched canvas, tacking it directly to the studio floor. The canvas is unprimed, as she stains rich colour hues into the canvas fibres Her paintings resonate with emotion through the use of varied surfaces, colour and materials.
Selected exhibitions include; Switch, Den Haag, Netherlands, John Moores Liverpool Exhibition, Royal Academy, London, Creekside Open, APT Gallery, London, 369 Gallery, Edinburgh, Air Gallery, London, Camden Arts Centre, London, Colour Paintings, Centre 181, Hammersmith, London, Essex Festival of Contemporary Arts, Colchester Arts Centre, Essex and Woodlands Art Gallery, Greenwich, London.
Her paintings have been filmed for an independent production for Channel 4, and for Lewisham College. Lou opens her studio to the public every year as part of APT Open Studios.
